  • IS THERE PREJUDICE AGAINST DARKER SKIN JAMAICAN WOMEN ?

    The plantation regime of slavery had a major impact on the Jamaican society long after the the abolition of slavery.The lighter the skin ,the more valuable you were during slavery and even today,after coming  such a long way, that mentality still stands.

    As recent as the 1960’s,dark skin Jamaican women were not the faces you would normally see serving in the banks,at the airline counters,at the hotel counters or at any of the higher positions in larger companies. It was well accepted that the place for the darker skin Jamaican women was certainly not in the better or more top jobs. This took a major toll on the self esteem of Young black Jamaican women,who accepted the position of living as a second class citizen.Darker skin women during the 1960’s did not bother much with higher education for various reasons, such as affordability,self worth, having babies,not enough schools for higher education and not much in the future regarding better jobs.

    The early 1970’s saw a new beginning and a turn in the direction regarding skin colour. A young politician by the name of Micheal Manley(very light complexion man)became the Prime minister of Jamaica and spoke out strongly regarding prejudice against the darker skin Jamaicans.He constantly preached about equality among all skin colour.Mr. Manley himself fell in love with and married Beverley Manley, a dark skinJamaican woman, who sported an  afro .Micheal Manley was well loved  among Jamaicans and was able to get his message across to many.Self esteem among darker Jamaicans on a whole was on a high. Slogans like-PROUD TO BE BLACK and BLACK IS BEAUTIFUL were extremely popular.Songs included words like EMANCIPATE YOURSELVES FROM MENTAL SLAVERY,NONE BUT OURSELVES CAN FREE OUR MINDS(Bob Marley) and YOUNG GIFTED AND BLACK (made popular by Bob Andy and Marcia Griffiths were soaring on the charts in the 1970’s.Darker skin women were getting a boost of self esteem. They were ”proud to be black” and sported  their neat afros ,dressed confidently in their pedal pushers,mini skirts and hot pants.The faces that greeted customers at the service desks,banks and persons who represented companies as senior staff and managers were now including a number of Dark skin Jamaicans.As people became more aware of their self worth, education became a priority.

    SOCIAL ACCEPTANCE IN JAMAICA

    You have to have one or all of the following to be socially accepted. Money,Education,Lighter complexion.Although Jamaica had never lost the whole stigma of the fair skin Jamaicans being the superior,The darker skin Jamaicans had become very aware that if they educate themselves, they could achieve greatness and become whatever they want to be.Black Jamaicans are now Bank Managers,Hotel Managers and owners,Doctors, Teachers,business owners and Might I say Prime minister !!Education has played quite an important roll in the lives of black Jamaicans who started achieving more,becoming bosses and professionals.

    BLEACHING:

    What could have brought on the recent craze for lighter skin among dark skin Jamaicans especially women !! . This activity is identified mostly among the poorer class and the less educated. Could this be that the quest to be socially accepted has left them with no other choice ?The poorer class obviously has no money ,without money it is hard to get a higher education !! So the lightening of the skin might be the easiest of the three !! This certainly is no excuse for bleaching of the skin, as this is an extremely dangerous practice ,which can negatively affect ones health.

    HAVE BLACK MEN BETRAYED DARK SKIN  WOMEN ?

    The darker skin women are losing the battle against the lighter skin women in the quest for love.Jamaican men seem to much favour the ”brownings”(women with lighter complexion) and women of different race with lighter complexion.It is very obvious to see the pride and adoration in the faces of some black men when they walk down the street hand in hand with a light complexion woman !! One explanation given to me by a black man was ”Black women do not groom themselves as well and things like going to the gym and spa are not very common among them”. A very famous DJ unleashed a monster among Jamaicans when he released the popular song-”mi love mi car mi love mi bike mi love mi money an ting, but most of all mi love mi browning ”. That popular song (although very catchy and I must admit ,I danced to the beat a few times)took us back several years, as many Jamaican men felt and still feel the need to follow suite.

    A LOOK AHEAD

    The future looks very promising for the Dark skin Jamaican women,who have gotten far ahead in life, becoming Lawyers,doctors,Bank managers, Hotel managers even Prime minister,Achieving Bachelors ,Masters and PhD degrees.The future looks very bright, however loyalty from Jamaican Black men would be good .Most Black women are confident enough not to be needy ,but to move forward to where they are appreciated and needed

    Many articles are written about how to get a ‘JAMAICAN MAN’, but it is also extremely important to know how to maintain the relationship and keep the man in your life .Many Jamaican men are afraid of taking the step towards marriage because they feel ” THE WOMAN CHANGES ONCE SHE GETS THE RING ”. Yes ,sometimes women take things for granted and some women are very immature in their actions,however,most times poor communication and misunderstanding are the main culprits that lead to the road of separation. Below are some of the things women need to keep in mind to maintain a great marriage to a Jamaican man .

    1) LISTEN- The first year in a marriage is ” THE GETTING TO KNOW EACH OTHER YEAR”.It is the year you get to learn the most about your partner. Although you will continue to learn about him as the years go by, the first year is when you are most taken aback by his different moods and actions, re-actions and general personality.Jamaican men basically communicate  more during the dating stage and the beginning of marriage.LISTEN WELL and ask questions if you are not sure.Women who do not listen well and/or do not pay much attention to what he says,you will miss out and suffer the consequences later.He will shut down after he feels you are not very sensitive to his needs or desires(not that he is selfish, but he thinks if you love him you will try to do the things he likes).Most Jamaican men are extremely family oriented and will not be quick to get a divorce, however he can totally shut down while remaining in the matrimonial home.The Jamaican man will tell you his likes and dislikes but he will not repeat himself constantly !! So remember ladies, our first line of duty is to LISTEN !! He will certainly not have the same discussion over and over !

    2)COMMUNICATE- The next step to have a great marriage to a Jamaican man is to learn to communicate well. Our Jamaican men are not the most patient of men and will get frustrated very easily. You however can have him loving you even more and wanting to be around you more if he feels connected and free to be himself. It is very important for a woman not to attack her husband when he says something she does not like or approve of.It is extremely hard sometimes to control our emotions but it is very important to do so.Never sweep bad feelings under the carpet,just choose the appropriate time to talk.Most discussions can be had in the bedroom,just before bed (especially if kids are in the home).Try never to go to bed angry with each other.If the problem needs more time to solve it, make a date to do so, going out for a drink  , dinner or even a walk,can be a very relaxing way to talk more and come to an understanding with disagreements.The main thing is to give each other time to talk while the other listens .Put yourself in the other partner’s shoe and ask ” how would I feel” ? Getting respect from his woman is at the top of a Jamaican man’s list. Never talk to a Jamaican man as if you are in charge, always be submissive ,however have it all together. Know exactly what you want and stick to the point (Do not keep straying on things he did the months before).

    3)BE A GREAT HOMEMAKER-A Jamaican man takes pride in his home. His home is his castle where he is the king and likes to have peace. Home is where he comes to re-charge ,relax and be himself .He does not like to come home and have to face an argument or a disgruntled face.He enjoys coming home to a beautifully put together woman with welcoming arms who is happy to see him. Jamaican men enjoys coming home to a very clean house and also appreciate a delicious meal. They like a wife who cooks well and entertains well .This practice is his idea of having  an excellent homemaker and wife.He also likes it when his wife cares a great deal for his health

    4)FIND OUT HIS SLEEP ROUTINE-One very important thing couples need to look out for ”what time clock is your partner on ”. This is not taken into consideration  by many and has caused many separations.Some people are morning people, which means they are more alive ,alert and vibrant in the mornings.The morning person gets up very early in the mornings and can sometimes be insensitive to the sleeping needs of the other person.They sometimes feel the need to discuss some very important things early in the morning,which would at that time not be processed properly by the other spouse who is trying to sleep or relax in bed.Sometimes the feeling of rejection can start to brew if one partner’s conversation is taken lightly in this case, or if their sexual advance and desires are brushed aside.The same thing happens when one partner is a night person and the other is not,The night person might feel like he/she is being rejected ,not getting enough attention and not being loved ultimately.Once this part of the relationship is sorted out and couples can compromise ,a huge weight can be lifted off the shoulders of the marriage.

    5)LOOK OUT FOR HIM-Jamaican men like it when their women “HAVE THEIR BACKS”. Never discuss him in a negative way with your best friends or family members.Never crack jokes about him in a negative light or expose his downfalls to others.This lets him feel less of a man and not comfortable around you. If your partner is the type of person who likes the spotlight ,say  things to uplift him ,when around others.Pay attention to his interests ,hobbies and goals in life , be supportive at all times.Always let it be known to him and others that you are on his side.Always wait until you get home to let him know if you totally disagree with him on a particular matter.

    6)LET HIM BE THE MAN- Jamaican men like to be in charge of the family. Their actions might not show it at times, but they have the need to constantly” WEAR THE PANTS”. They are usually filled with pride  and cares what people think of them regarding being the head of the house.Let him have equal input on major decisions regarding the house,the family and finance.Be affectionate and gentle to him, yet strong and assertive when the need arise . The Jamaican ,man although he likes to be in charge loves a strong woman.

    7)MAINTAIN YOUR APPEARANCE-Like every other man,the Jamaican man is very proud when his wife ”FIXES UP HERSELF” (looks good all the time)After all ,it was one of the reason he was first attracted to you ! Even when finances are not up to scratch,groom your hair in an attractive fashion,take the time to wear some make up and wear clothes that fits well. Many women tend to eat more during stressful times and therefore put on weight,never go out and buy new clothes to fit into after a weight gain.Work out at the gym or take long walks to shed those extra pounds !! Always maintain good hygiene ,wear his favourite perfumes and ALWAYS,ALWAYS wear great lingerie.

    8)INTIMACY – The lock to a great marriage! Every thing else can close that door but if you really want a secure and firm relationship , the extra bolt on that door  would be great intimacy with him.     Chilling Your Green Smoothies

    There are two ways of chilling your healthy smoothie recipes: using frozen fruit — or adding ice cubes.

    • Ice Cubes — a good way of thinning down a smoothie that’s too thick and chilling it at the same time.

    • Frozen Fruit — has the advantage of not diluting the taste, and also giving your smoothie a creamier texture. It’s very easy and convenient to create a stash of frozen cut-up fruit, so you always have some on hand.

    Many smoothie recipes call for the use of milk or yogurt. I personally don’t recommend the use of dairy products, but I will leave this up to you. I suggest using water or a nut milk instead, and that’s what you’ll find in the recipes below. Substitute regular milk or yogurt if you prefer.


    BANANA -KALE SMOOTHIE    

                                     

    1-2 Bananas (very ripe)
    1 Table Spoon of  grounded flax seed
    3 Organic Kale Leave (without stems)
    1 Table Spoon of  purelife super green food
    2-3 Cups of Ice
    2-3 Mint Leaves (optional)

    3 Tble spoon yogurt

    Directions

    Blend till smooth and creamy. You should not be able to see any small parts of the kale. Fresh & organic mixed greens will work as well.

     

    GREEN SMOOTHIE

     

    Ingredients                                             

    2 Large Lemons,
    1 Med- Large piece of Ginger Root,
    1 Granny Apple,
    Ice,
    Purified Water
    4-5 Hand Fulls of Spinach Leaves or 2 tbs. supergreen food

    a pinch of stevia(sweetner)

    Directions

    Peel the lemons, remove the seeds. Squeeze every bit of juice into the blender, next add the water and ice, peel the Ginger root, chop it up in fine squares, Slice the Apple (keep peel on), Add the Spinach. Add more water, sprinkle on top Kal Brand Stevia (it is really the best) and blend.

     

    BEETROOT DRINK

    Ingredients                          

    1 medium beet, peeled and cut into wedges
    1 cup pineapple chucks
    1 cup water
    1 tablespoon fresh grated ginger
    Juice of half a lemon

    Directions

    Juice the beets in a juicer. Strain the beet juice and pour into a blender container. Add the pineapple chunks, water, ginger, and lemon juice to the blender and blend until liquefied. Pour the juice through a large strainer, if desired.

     

    Mango fruit is a great source of beta carotene and vitamin C.

    It is also chuck full of other nutrients.

    Mangoes contain an enzyme with stomach soothing properties similar to papain found in papayas.

    Adding spinach to the smoothie makes a real nutrition powerhouse.

    MY FAVOURITE GREEN SMOOTHIE

    2 hands full spinach

    1 table spoon supergreen food

    1  well ripe banana (frozen)

    1 tbs.coconut oil.

    1 cup pure water

    Blend all ingredients in blender until smooth. Enjoy !!!

     JAMAICAN CALLALOO SMOOTHIE

    Jamaican callaloo smoothie(power punch)

    2 tbl. sp. Callaloo powder or two hands full fresh callaloo (cut up)

    1 very ripe banana (frozen)

    1 cup purified water

    1 cup yogurt

    1 tbl. sp honey or a little stevia (optional)as sweetner.

    1/2 cup ice

    Blend all ingredients together until smooth. Enjoy !!!


    Tropical Green Smoothie

    1 cup of frozen pineapple
    1 cup of papaya or 1 banana
    1 cup of coconut water
    1 tablespoon of coconut oil
    2 cups of kale or spinach or 2 scoops Purelife super green food powder

    Blend well.


    Spinach Berry Banana Green Smoothie

    1 cup of mixed berries
    1 banana
    2 handfuls of spinach
    1 handful of parsley
    1 tsp spirulina
    water

     

     

    Spinach Apple Carrot Orange Smoothie
    2 apples
    1 carrot
    2 oranges, peeled
    1/2 lemon
    cinnamon to taste
    1 banana
    handful or two of spinach

     

     

    Pineapple Pear Banana Parsley
    Green Smoothie

    2 ripe pears
    1/3 of a fresh pineapple
    1/2 frozen banana
    1/3 of a large bunch of parsley
    1/2-inch slice of fresh ginger
    1 cup of filtered water
    1 cup of ice cubes (optional)


    Banana Cantaloupe Green Smoothie

    1 cup sliced cantaloupe or water melon
    1 frozen, ripe banana (sliced)
    1 cup nut milk

  • My Story on how I got my body from illness to alkaline

    As a very busy business owner,a wife and a very hands on mother of two, I put all my time into everyone and everything else, caring very little about my health. I was aware that I should be eating vegetables,which I often did,but a mare handful on the side of my dinner would make me feel like I am being kind to my body.As a Jamaican, white rice was the main staple and of course Pork was a major part of the protein I consumed along with other red meats like oxtail and goat on a daily basis.Sodas and bottled fruit juices were the main drinks that I consumed with meals. I must say I had quite a bit of water during the days at work ,but surely not enough to alkalize  the acid I took into my body through the sodas and other junk food that I ate.

                    I had my regular check ups at my doctors and thought I lead a very healthy lifestyle. I however started having stomach problems, for which I was treated and told that these stomach conditions were because of my busy lifestyle. I began having the heart burns and stomach problems more frequently ,was treated always with the same medicine  and continued my lifestyle and the same eating habits.I started having allergies and frequent head-aches for which I just casually took painkillers and anti-histamines .This went on for years.not realizing that I was in a spiral going down in health. I started feeling really stressed out and tired very often, contributing all this to the business I ran.I finally sold the business and migrated to the U.S.A.After a few months of rest I noticed I got more and more tired, My stomach got worse ,to the point where I could not eat most foods, They would give me very bad heart burns. The head aches continued and  I lost over thirty pounds not being able to eat much.I remember clearly one day I drove to the supermarket to buy some stuff for dinner that evening and I could not get up from the car. I was so weak, that I had to sit for a while before I pulled myself up by holding on to the door,then the top of the car. I realized that day that I was in really poor health.I got weaker each day as I was not getting much nutrients for my body to even function much more to be healthy!! I kept going to doctors and emergency rooms in Hospitals and was put through various tests and given many different medicines in attempt to help me to “feel better”.One Doctor told me I had developed stomach ulcers which usually lead to stomach cancer. I got sick and tire of being sick and tire.

    My family started getting very concerned and one day my Mom said to me. ”I bought some calcium and something called enzymes from a TV commercial and they said it was good for everything !! At that time in my life I was willing to try anything !! The doctors basically were just trying out the different medications on me which were not helping at all. I tried the enzymes and on the same day I noticed I could eat a little without my stomach hurting bad.By this time I had been watching Dr. Don Colbert a well known Natural Health Doctor from Florida and had bought his books which taught me the foods never to eat and the foods we should always eat.He also talks about taking enzymes with meals for better digestion and that made me realize I was on the right path.Due to the fact that eating was so hard on my stomach, I started juicing vegetables (especially the dark leafy greens) and taking the enzymes after each drinkI also did a series of DETOX.I bought some super green foods(dark green leafy vegetable ground up in powder form) at the health food store and made smoothies which my entire family drank.The smoothies were so delicious that my kids who were 10 and 14 at that time looked forward to having it.Look for veg. smoothie recipes here.I kept juicing fresh vegetables and drinking smoothies with the various vegetables so I could get enough nutrients in my body.I started feeling much better after about two weeks and incorporated regular foods like brown rice,regular salads, fruits,fish (from the ocean),nuts,organic chicken and other healthy foods.Taking enzymes, Juicing vegetables ,fruits and making smoothies has been a part of my life ever since and I have never had another problem with my stomach since.I sometimes leave out juicing but my green superfood smoothies are always a quick alternative without the mess.

    My entire family has watched this transition in my life and we all live healthy by this changed lifestyle. Vegetables such as cabbage,broccoli,kale,wheat grass,spinach and calaloo has changed my life.They are packed with all the    nutrients,enzymes,antioxidants,vitamins and minerals we need to prevent cancer,heart disease,strokes and most other degenerative diseases. I believe that without starting to juice the vegetables and drink smoothies from the green superfood, I would certainly not be writing this article . The vegetable juices and green superfood that I believe in has turned my health and life around . This lifestyle has never seized to amaze me !!  My husband who suffered a mild stroke and was told he would have to be on Plavix for the rest of his life has been cleared for the past eight years and is in great health. What can I say !! Green superfood and juicing vegetables and fruits has changed our family and we are forever Thankful !!!!
